Welcome to the blog! I can see you had a soggy Marathon run in St. George? Nice to have you on board! Keep up the good work. Oh and dont worry about your kids. They'll call when they need something! lol

From Smooth on Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 18:44:55

WELCOME to the blog!!!

By the look of your darling cute outfit, do you happen to have a sister with the same outfit who lives in SF?

Nice workouts and great x-train. Do you go to a gym or are you a living room athlete?

Yeah, my kids (actually my sons) don't call either, and I'm the one paying their phone bills. Walter is right on...he must be speaking with experience (as a son, that is).

When your son goes on his mission, he will obey the mission prez and write then...something' to look forward to.:)

Smooth :D

From walter on Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 18:50:16

Yeah its from the other way around. I bug my parents. My dad always answers the phone with what do you need? I dont need anything dad, just wanted to call you wink wink!

From Kathie on Wed, Oct 22, 2008 at 18:57:25

I go to the gym. I go after I drop my daughter at school and it is on the way. I try to do more cross training during the off season.

Thanks Mark. I am not sure it was really that great of a run. It seems like I am doing more cross training than running now days.

From huans32 on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 17:37:50

Well I think we are all still in our recovery. And building back up. Right now is the perfect time to start the xtraining routines to make them habits. Great job doing it though. I have only had a few fast miles myself. But it is more then what I did for the last 2-3 months besides in races.

From Smooth on Thu, Oct 23, 2008 at 18:23:17

At least you know what you're doing. I'm going crazy not having any race to train for at the moment. I DO enjoy this phase when I redefine my goal and formulate a training plan for the next cycle. That's why I got on this blog last week...otherwise I would be aimless and not keep track.

What's your next race(s)?

Back bends? What's that? I can hardly bend forward. Back bend push ups? Isn't that what inch-worms do? I think I'd be rolling on the floor w/ pain or laugh myself silly.

From JeffC on Fri, Oct 24, 2008 at 15:20:37

The fact that you are doing Yoga is huge. I don't think I could make it through five minutes of a yoga class. I am not flexible at all, people would laugh, people would cry, it would not be pretty.

I went out for a ten mile run today.  I wanted to keep up my base miles from the marathon even though I am only training for a half.  We were going to leave for the BYU game at 9:30. I was going with my cute friends so I couldn’t just throw on a baseball hat and call it good I had to have time to get ready.  I left the house at 6:15, it was very dark and it stayed dark for most my run I really need to find a running buddy, it was not really safe running in the dark alone.  Anyway I didn’t really run faster than normal but I did feel really strong at the end so this made me happy.

Ran 5x400 at 5k pace which is 7:30 for me.  I did this on the treadmill.  One mile warm up first one 7:30 pace seemed to easy walked 100 then next one at 7:24 pace walk 100 and did the same for the third and fourth still seemed a little to easy so I did the fifth at 7:00 pace.

Here is my question for all you pros out there because this seemed to easy next time should I

a) jog not walk rest interval

b) run them all at 7:00 pace

c) walk/jog only 50 meters

d) something else I am to new to even know

Oh by the way next time I do this speed work out I will do 6 interval instead of 5

From huans32 on Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 12:47:24

No pro here so I dont know how much advice I can give you on it. But sounds like your needing to run another 5k and find your new pace. You sound like your ready to up your 5k pace. So do a 5k and check where your at. With all the xtraining you are going to get faster for sure. I also try to jog at a 10:00 pace between intervals also.

From Smooth on Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 13:20:01

Kathie --

My experience with 400's is it usually gets harder with each progressive interval, not easier. Mind you I haven't done much on the treadmill and mostly 800's on pavement.

So, I'm thinking you have probably picked up some speed from your last training cycle. It's time to up your 5K pace so you're running your full potential.

Hey, you can do the Teena thing. I'll bet you can run sub-7 easily.

As far as the recovery b/w intervals. The general rule seems to be take no longer than half the time or distance and it doesn't matter whether you jog or walk for that.

I recommend running your intervals on the road sometimes. Or like Mark suggest race a 5K and see what your current fitness 5K pace is.

From saamijeff on Mon, Oct 27, 2008 at 13:30:19

Remember to add 18-25 seconds to your treadmill pace to equal the road if you do not have the treadmill set for at least a 1% grade, due to lack of wind resistance. I always use 20 seconds faster than the pace I should be using on the road/track.

From RivertonPaul on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 08:59:41

To the dismay of many, I do most of my training on treadmills, including my long runs. My experience is that treadmills can vary one from another, so on some treadmills you have to adjust your pace up, while on others you may have to adjust it down. Others may be calibrated very accurately, like the higher end treadmills I run on at the gym are calibrated very well and the paces they indicate correlate very well to my running outside. However, on my home treadmill I actually have to run paces much SLOWER than it indicates to achieve the same result (this drives me crazy, but its just the way it is). So if your perceived effort on your treadmill is too easy for the pace it indicates, you may need to adjust pace upward. The key is to figure out the specific treadmills you use and to use the same machines -- then you can compare your improvements over time.

From JeffC on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 10:36:52

I do 800 intervals at about a 6:40/mile pace which translates into PR 5K for me. In other words, they're faster than my 5K pace. I take the same amount of time for recovery as it took me run the interval. So if I run it in 3:20, I jog easy for 3:20, etc. For marathon training I think 800 or 1600 intervals would be more beneficial for you. I am yet to do 1600 meter intervals but plan to give it a try some time in the near future.

From Rhett on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 14:44:13

I think 5K pace is good for mile repeats, for 800m you should go a little faster in my opinion. Also, make sure your treadmill is set at 1% incline for same effort as running flat outside. I like to take 1 min walk breaks between each speed interval. Play with it and find what works for you. BTW, that was a great work out you did. Keep that up and you will become a speed demon.

A little bird called me at 12:00 today and said I was a slacker because I had not posted yet.  I told her that it was because I had not gone for my run yet.  Good thing for her and this blog or I might have just blown it off.

I went out and delivered flyers around the neighborhood for our trunk or treat party during my run.  So I am counting it as fartlek training, (run to the house and then post flyer) hill training (up and down the drive ways) and cross training (up and down the stairs).  I call that a well rounded work out!

3 miles in 33 minutes - Hey smooth what does the number three mean?

Kathie, what's your plan on Sat?

Wanna come run the post Halloween FRB run on the Jordan River Parkway by Thanksgiving Point with us?

We plan to meet at 7am. More details to come if you're interested.

From Kathie on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 20:18:55

I have to take my son to the Orthodontist (sp?) at 9:00 so I think I will run around here at 6:00 What time are you meeting maybe Hickgirl will want to run with you?

From Kathie on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 20:21:39

Maybe I should talk my son in to comming with us and just leaving from there. I am sure it is every 16 year old boys dream to run with a bunch of older (I won't say old) ladies!

From Smooth on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 20:31:08

We are meeting at 7 am. Kelli or Marion are posting the direction tomorrow.

If you come, take the 282 (12th West)exit, it's the one just south of Thanksgiving Point. That exit takes you directly on SR 89 (State St.) go south on SR 89 to 1500 North (Chevron gas station on the right), turn onto 1500 N and go west. The Jordan River Parkway access is there just before the bridge. There's a little parking area on the left before the bridge.

Most of the FRB runners are planning on 10 miles. You can run as much or little as you want using your Garmin and turn back.

Kim is welcome to join us. How about your sister in Highland. I imagine she'd know the area well.

From Kimmy on Tue, Oct 28, 2008 at 21:33:00

Our sister in Highland doesn't run at all. She may know the area but wouldn't be up for running.

I don't really think these are threshold miles but they were not easy miles eather.

I was going to run to vote this morning 1.5 miles from my house and then run home.  I watched the news last night and they said it would start to ran at 11:00.  I planned to be out the door by 7:30 and so I had plenty of time to get there and back before the rain started.  To my surprise it started to rain right at 7:30.  I was going to run any way but didn't want to run with an umbrella and I didn't want to stand in line without one. so I drove, voted and then went to the gym.  Ran 3 miles at 1% incline first one at 9:12 second 8:49 adn last one with intervals were I ajusted the speed any were from 6 mph to 7.2 mph.  Tomorrow I should run three miles at race pace but I am not sure what that pace is right now - Kimmy what pace are you going to run for you race pace day?  I think I might try 8:49 at 1% and see how that goes.

I plan on starting out for 5 minutes as a warm-up. after that I will TRY to run anywhere from 8:15 to your 8:49. I will be very happy if I can get 1 mile at the 8:15. I will try and finish hard and then cool down for 5 minutes. I will let you know how it goes.

3 miles at race pace is what the work out called for today.  I was not sure if I should go at 8:45 which is my marathon race pace or 8:30 which is my half marathon race pace.  After talking to Kimmy I decided to go with the 8:30 and see how it would go. Here is how it went.

Warmed up slowly for 5 min at a 1% incline I started at a 5.5mph and worked up to 6.0 after the five minutes I bumped up the speed to 7.1 mph (8:27 pace) ran that for a mile and a half and then bumped the speed to 7.2 (8:20 pace) ran that for .8 of a mile and then the last .2 I went to an 8.0 (7:30 pace)  It didn't feel good but I think the thing I am learning about speed work is that it is hard, it should be hard.  I so wanted it to get easy but I don't think it will and if I want to get faster I need to just stay with it even though it its hard.

Lifted for bicep, tricep, abs and back

Spin Class - Took it easy today I was spent from the run.

Great work out. That is some good times there too. Keep it up and think relax when doing speed work. Seems to make it just a tiny bit easier.

From Smooth on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 13:47:03

Very NICE speed workout. Looks like you do strength training quite a bit. Plus the classes you're doing makes an awesome all around workout. Oh and the 7:30 is awesome. I would fall off the treadmill with that pace. LOL. :) GOOD JOB!!!

From Teena on Wed, Nov 05, 2008 at 23:47:13

AWESOME!! That is a FANTASTIC run. Be glad that it's hard ... that's what makes you tough!! Seriously, when I am pushing myself to my max, I tell myself over and over ... "most people would give up by now ... stick it out ... let's see what you can do." Relish in it!! Seriously, do your yoga breathing techniques, and get'er done!!

So So So impressive!!! (you will sleep well tonight)

Good job Kathie. I feel the same way. It IS hard. I'm slowly building up my speed. Next week I bump it up to 5.7 for two weeks. Then after that, either 5.9 or 6.0. Slowly but surely I'll get to where I want to be.

From Smooth on Thu, Nov 06, 2008 at 15:14:47

Are you training for a tri? What do you do for the ham, quad and calf lifts?

From Kathie on Thu, Nov 06, 2008 at 17:16:57

No I am not training for a tri I NEVER ride outside I don't even own a bike. Before I got into running I would spin almost every day sometimes twice a day. Now I only spin twice a week. I think it is really great cross training. When i lift there are just a bunch of machines that I use. All the machines are color coded. The leg machines are green, abs orange, Back red and arms yellow. I just go from machine to machine until 30 min is up. I don't really follow a plan. I am sure I could do better but that would be too much work!

From huans32 on Thu, Nov 06, 2008 at 17:44:05

Wow that is quite the workout there Kathie. Was spin for a hr too?? You couldnt be doing those all 3 together in the same visit to the gym. If you are my hat is off to you. That is one tough workout.

Out the door at 6:15 for my run today.  Went for a 10 mile run.  When I started I told myself that I was still getting over being sick and I wouldn’t look at my watch at all this run.  I still took it with me of course I would feel naked without it! Here are my splits and I am looking at them for the first time as I type this.

 9:20, 8:57, 9:14, 9:01, 9:29, 8:52, 9:36, 9:49, 10:11, 11:28

Here are my splits from when I ran the same route two weeks ago

 9:14, 8:59, 9:14, 8:48, 9:29, 9:00, 9:37, 11:17, 9:37, 11:12

The hills at the end of this route kill me!

It is weird how some of the miles are the exact same pace from last time I did this run!

Off to BYU game and then to the “Taste of Utah” charity event.

Ok I had somthing weird happen to me at the gym today.  I ate breakfast and went to the gym.  I started to run and I suddenly got VERY hungry not that oh I could eat hungry but the fast Sunday hungry.  I was looking for used gum hungry (not really that is gross!) Anyway I finished my run but it was much slower. I did 1.5 miles at 9:13 and then had to do the last 1.5 at 10:00.  In my gym bag I had ten raw almonds I ate them and lifted for my arms.  When I was going into spin I still felt hungry started class and about half way through the feeling went away.  Weird right!  Have any of you had this happen?

You are so funny. Yeah, that happens to me all the time. Sometimes the hunger doesn't go away, so by the time I'm done running I have to rummage through the fridge for something quick.

I run hungry all the time, but it always seems that just as I'm getting to within a few minutes of home, the hunger goes away, at least for 10 minutes, then it's back to my ravenous self!

From huans32 on Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 13:22:38

I am like that alot actually too. And I will eat like a pig for say. It mostly happens after running like what I just did. Running Wen night and then Thurs morning. I would finish my run and be like feed me. I would be able to eat a beto's burrito and my normal 3 meals at work and still be starving. Like I just couldnt eat enough. What was really telling me was when I would get on the scale and notice that I would be down 5-8 pounds. That is what the problem was. I was just really dehydrated. So what I have done the last few times. Which worked great again for me today. Was make sure to drink alot of water after my run last night. And again this morning. Just make sure to fill up on water more. And the urges to feed like a wild animal was alot better. Not sure if that is what your experienced today. Just that your body is needing something and your thinking it is food when it is need water more. Also something you can check out is your weight before and after workouts to see how much your losing water wise. It really helps to know what your really losing and if your getting enough in.

From Kimmy on Thu, Nov 13, 2008 at 13:38:17

Immediately after I finished St. George, My wife took me to A Burger Kind drive thru and I ate a fish sandwich. Then a half hour later I was starving again so we went to the Golden Corral where I at a plate of spaghetti, some mac & cheese, slice of pizza, two slices of prime rib, two slices of turkey, mashed potatoes & gravy and to top it off a nice slice of carrot cake. Then, 3 hours later I went to Mongolian BBQ and had a huge bowl of noodles with beef and chicken. Whew.

O, I'm guessing the 4:36 listed on your last 0.5 mi must be the running time. But then again, you could be running a sub-5 mile pace there for those last 0.5 miles. Any chance it was all downhill there? If not, you are officially a speed demon.

Went out to do a mile loop around my house four times.  It is very hilly and steep both up and down after the first mile I decided that was not fun at all and did the other three on rolling hills

splits: 9:20, 8:46, 8:38, 8:40

The day was so nice I spent the next few hours in the yard and I am heading out with a book right now just to enjoy the sunshine.  I called Kimmy and told her she needed to skip work and enjoy the sun as well. I hope she does.

Those are nice splits on rolling hills. I'm all for skipping work. Ahhh!!! a book under the Autumn sun, pure joy...you're inspiring me to have a nice day.

From Rhett on Tue, Nov 18, 2008 at 17:05:09

Hills are no fun, but they pay off on race day. Glad to hear the weather is so nice. Hope it keeps up for you.

Great minds think a like. I ran 4 miles today. Couldn't get off of work. Even after you talked to may boss he still wouldn't let me leave...go figure!!!!

Great run...our splits are very close

9:09; 8:30; 8:23; and 8:42. Howerver that last mile I had stopped and talked to a little girl in my Primary class. I know it would have been slower....closer to the 9:00 minute range I was really tired after 3. good Job Kathie.

LOL so I see what is going on here. Kimmy is taunting you with her times. I wonder if she actually ran that or not. Well next Thurs we will see wont we.:) Great job Kathie on such a great hill workout. You are getting so much faster and stronger. I am betting on KATHIE GO KATHIE GOOOOO!!!!! (Sorry Kimmy)

From Kathie on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 12:52:00

Mark you are putting so much pressure on me! Cut it out! Kimmy is going to get made and dust me just to prove to you she is faster.... but then again maybe you are being sneaky too and that is you evil plan all along!

From Kimmy on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 13:25:37

Mark.....I am so hurt. I am the underdog here. Kathie....has no life all she has to do is worry about working out.

Me on the other hand has to work 50 hours a week....run my daughter everywhere and then try and fit a workout in.

You should be saying Goooooo Kimmy!!!!

Anyway, I don't even try to beat Kathie. She is so stinking (I took that word from Teena) competative that its not worth it.

From huans32 on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 13:35:41

LOL you guys are a riot. I am cheering for you both really. I was happy to see you both cross the finish line at ToU. I was suprised to see Kathie just a few steps behind you. She had alot left in her for sure since she ran over and high fived Slick and I. Will be interesting to see who is going to win the trot though. Hmm now if only we would see what kind of training Kimmy is doing. And not be so sneaky about it we would know.:) Who knows we might even start cheering more for you too. GO KATHIE!!! (and kimmy too)

Tempo run today.  On my schedule it said 35 min tempo run.  I am still not sure what this means.  I know that a tempo run should be faster than your goal race pace.  What I am unsure of is how much of the 35 minutes should be faster and how much faster than race pace should it be.

This is what I did set the treadmill at 1% incline and 35 min run time.  I started at a 6.0mph pace and every two minuted I would up the pace by one.  When I got to 7.2 mph (8:20 pace) I stayed at this pace for 6 minutes and then did 3 minutes at a 7:0 pace (8:34 my goal race pace)

Was I even close to a "tempo run"?  I should add that 8:30 is my goal race pace at this point I am not sure I could run it further than a 10k.  I am training for a half marathon.

Looks like you did a fine tempo run. Normally it is just faster then your MP so yours is 8:34 Anywhere between the like 7:50 to 8:20 I would say your good. And it is good that you started out slow like that. You did it just right be my book. Great job.

From Rhett on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 13:23:00

It was more of what I call a progression run, but it was a great workout. Are you training for a 10K? What's the race? For me a 35 min tempo run would be half marathon pace after a mile warmup.

From Kimmy on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 13:31:38

Kathie...Good workout. Mine didn't go as well. My foot hurts when I run on the treadmill. I will try and do a temp tonight.

From Kathie on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 13:33:19

Rhett

I am training for painter half marathon. 8:30 is my goal pace for that race. So you think I should warm up for a mile and then run 8:20 for the rest of the time? If I did 8:30 (my half marathon pace) That would be a race pace run rather than a tempo run right?

From DonGardinero on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 13:36:33

Great job Kathie...Sounds like you did what I do a lot of on the treadmill.

Dale

From Rhett on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 14:54:32

Kathie, I still think tempo runs are based off of mathaton pace, but if you keep them short enough you can go faster. I guess I would warm up for a mile then 3 miles around 8:20 then cool down the rest of your time. Of course, in the end, you have to figure out what works best for you. Those progression runs are great too, but I would do those on long run days, that way you train your body to finish strong on race day.

From Andy on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 15:09:20

I consider 1/2 marathon pace to be tempo pace. I second Rhett's advice. Warm up a mile then run a few miles at tempo pace then cool down.

From Rhett on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 15:26:02

Good, I'm glad Andy agrees that tempo runs are at 1/2 marathon pace even when training for a 1/2 marathon. I was starting to question myself.

From Smooth on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 19:43:32

Kathie -- Great workout. What schedule are you following? Are you using McMillan's calculator for the pace? I like Rhett's and Andy's advice. To me it's simpler to run a certain miles at tempo pace rather than time.

From Kathie on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 20:10:42

I am using Hal Higdon's intermediate half marathon training and McMillan's pace chart.

I think the main thing I did wrong last year is I didn't take my training one race at a time. I was always training for the race down the road rather than the one right in front of me. Or even worse half way training for two different races.(trying to train for Ogden's half marathon and Ragnar for example) I hope that makes sense.

So that is why I am trying to train for this half as if it were the only race I am doing this year.

From Teena on Wed, Nov 19, 2008 at 22:59:29

Hey Kathie!!

No matter what you do I am sure you will be fine because you push yourself. But just fyi, last year I ran Painter's at an 8:23 pace, and looking at my running log my tempo runs were right about that exact same pace, give or take a few seconds. Perhaps just coincidence ... who knows.

From JeffC on Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 11:14:00

Kathie..great workout! I know Higdon likes to use an amount of time for his tempo runs. When I used his plan I would figure out my tempo pace and then translate it into miles. I work better if I have a set number of miles than a time. So for your run today I probably would have made it a 4 mile tempo run with 1 mile of warm up and 1 mile of cool down. Your tempo pace is supposed to be right about your half marathon pace. Since you are training for a half marathon I think you could push that pace down a little to like 8:15-8:20, like rhett said. The most important thing for me in a tempo is a good warm-up. Make sure your muscles are good and warm before you start pushing. You're doing great.

From Kimmy on Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 12:51:14

Jeff,

My question is you say your tempo run should be 4 miles with 1 mile warmup and cool down. So does that mean you are running your tempo for 2 miles? Or is your total run going to be 6 miles?

From JeffC on Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 13:55:27

Kimmy....Total run would be 6 miles. 1 warm up, 4 tempo and 1 cool down. Tempo runs should probably be 3-7 miles in length. I don't know if the cool down is as important as the warm-up. I suppose if you walked for a few minutes after the last tempo mile, that would get you a nice cool down and you could limit the run to 5 miles. Today after my marathon pace run I ended with a martahon pace mile (instead of a cool down pace mile), then I walked about a quarter mile back to my house and did some stretching when I got home, it was a pretty good cool down.

From JeffC on Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 14:00:43

Kimmy..Just to clarify my comment above on the length of tempo runs (since I am such a numbskull). When I say that tempo runs should be 3-7 miles in length that does not include the warm up or cool down miles, it only includes the tempo pace miles. The total run would probably be 5-9 miles. I sure said a lot with these posts, but I really didn't say much....geeeeez!!!

From Smooth on Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 15:07:29

Jeff, (sorry to hijack here) I totally understand your description of a tempo run. That's how I do mine too. The important thing for me in Tempo Runs is to be able to sustain that "tempo pace" for x amount of miles. I did all my tempo runs on the road. It took a lot of focus for me to sustain that pace for that long. Pfitzinger suggests a 2-3 mile warm up, slower runners run closer to their 15K race pace whereas faster runners run closer to their half marathon race pace.

Kathie -- you're doing awesome. I don't think there's anything wrong with what you were doing: "I think the main thing I did wrong last year is I didn't take my training one race at a time. I was always training for the race down the road rather than the one right in front of me."

I have done it both ways. In Nov 2006 I used Higdon's half marathon schedule to train for Painter's 07 and meshed it well into a full marathon training for Ogden 07.

In Nov 2007 I began training for Boston 08, all the races in between were incorporated as "training runs". I didn't train specifically for the upcoming race per se. I can see your point in training for the race so it serves the purpose of a "tune-up race". But then again, if you're gunning for a PR or a win with "the race in front of you", then definitely train with that goal in mind. Am I making sense? Either way you are doing what fits you the best and serve the purpose. You're working so hard, you will do GREAT at Painter's.

It was good to see you today (yes Teena it is the same rec center and running group). There must have been something about the morning because I struggled on the course too. At least the Utes won so the day wasn't a total loss. I have my Garmin set on auto pause so it automatically stops when I have to wait at stop lights.

Nice job on the run. So, when are you going to give me the scoop on the course?

From Andy on Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 13:39:00

I don't want to get caught in the middle of a sibling rivalry but I mapped the course on the course tool last year. After you sign in click on the "Course Tool" link. Search for "South Davis Rec Center Turkey Trot 5K". They moved the start and finish line a little bit to make the course the right distance but other than that it is pretty accurate. The first mile is a slight downhill followed by almost 2 miles of slight uphill. The last 1/4 mile is slightly downhill.

So sorry you have been sick. My hubby was starting to fell better last week; then Max Hall's terrible 6 turnovers caused a relapse, I'm sure. He's still not 100%.

What's your resting heart rate? When I had that terrible bronchitis last winter resulting in an ER trip from fainting I noticed my resting heart rate was elevated. Instead of in the mid 40's, it was in the 70's just laying in bed. You're smart to monitor your heart rate while exercising so you don't overdo or worse, pass-out.

Hope you feel better soon and able to enjoy Thanksgiving with your family.

As most of you know this race was going to be the first time Kimmy and I race each other rather than running with each other.  I was still a little sick when I got up for the race and was a little scared about pushing my heart rate after the spin class.

When I went to wake up Katlyn she said her back still hurt (a problem she has been having for a few months now).  I knew she was feeling bad because she really wanted to run with McKenna.  Anyway when I told Kim Katlyn was not going to run Kim decided to run with McKenna and I was on my own.

After we got our bags Kim and I decided to warm up for a while.   I started to feel light headed again, I look at my heart rate monitor and my heart rate was 152.  I was afraid that I would not be able to defend my title from last year (I won my age group).  The plan was I would start out going as fast as I could and if I felt like I was going to pass out I would slow down and run with Kim and McKenna.

I started out and felt bad but I remember during spin that the feeling passed so I thought I would give it a minute and I started to feel better soon after we started.

About ¾ of a mile into the race a very nice man started to run beside me.  I think he thought I was a new runner and he would yell out our time from the stopwatch around his neck.  This actually really helped because I didn’t need to look at my Garmin I could just run. My first mile was 7:43.  I knew this was a little fast but this is the only portion of the race that was down hill and I wanted to take advantage of it.  At 1.5 mile My “team mate” yelled out 12:00 even I thought if I could keep up this pace I could come in around 24 minutes I was really excited.   About this time my “team mate” started to fade and I was really sad because he was so much help.  I finished the second mile in 8:13 but I still felt great. At mile 2.5 I felt my lungs start to give out.  I was still really congested.  I guess you need to breath to run, who knew!  I could here myself wheezing as I ran and people started to pass me.  I just wanted to hold on until the end.  I turned the corner right before the finish line and there was a lady in front of me that I though might be in my age group.  I had to pass her I push and did just barely.  The last mile was 8:35 with a total time of 25:01. I took first in my age group and 74th over all. Last year I finished this race in 24:59 with splits of 7:30, 8:11 and 8:23.  This year they changed the start and the finish because it was too short last year so I am happy with the race over all.

That's awesome speed workout. How often do you do the "lifts"? Is the Gravitron a pull-up bar? You doing Teena's pullup/chinup contest?

From Rhett on Tue, Dec 02, 2008 at 12:35:37

Wow! Your taking this pullup challange seriously. Your going to rock. And it will probably help you become a better runner as well.

I hope you are very happy with yourself. The pain is totally worth it when you get to feel awesome all day!!

From Smooth on Tue, Dec 02, 2008 at 16:19:59

AWESOME run!!! VERY NICE splits, progressively faster by 20 sec. each mile and on a hilly route to boot. You're gonna rock at Painter's.

Does Kimmy run on hilly routes in Spanish Fork? You got that advantage living where you are.

I'll never get used to the pain, I'm too wimpy.

3 miles 1% incline first one at 6.5 (9:13 pace) last two at 7.0 (8:34 pace)  It was not easy but not as hard as in the past hopefully it is a combination of me getting faster and over my cold.

Lifted for hamstrings and then spent way too much time on the gravitron (Teena I said your name in vain several times today sorry!) I put just enough weight on the gravitron to do one pull-up and I tried to do two at that weight then I would add 10 pounds and try and do three etc. (when you add weight to the gravitron it is easier not harder)  I am not sure how many pull-ups I did but I can't move my head or neck right now (Oh sorry Teena I just said your name in vain again! Teeeeennnnnaaaa) I am saying your name the way Captain Kirk said Kaaaahhhhnnn in the second Star Trek move!

Spin - hill intervals, I forgot my heart rate monitor and felt naked in class without it!

I wanted to do 13 miles today with Kimmy but we couldn't get together so I planed on doing 6 before the Christmas breakfast this morning.  One emergency after another prevented me from going before the party.  Then one fun thing after another prevented me from going after.  Finally around 4:00 I changed and started to go out when my son came home, said that he was going to babysit his girlfriend's puppy which being translated from teenager into English ruffly means "mom if you don't want to be cleaning little messes up of the carpet all night you will need to babysit the dog"  I took the dog to the park and started to run with my Garmin hoping I could get a few miles in but the dog wouldn't follow.  Finally I convinced my daughter to watch her while I ran.  I started out all was going well until it started to get dark and I noticed I was wearing pavement gray and nothing reflective at all!  I turned around and ran home I could have put on something reflective and gone out for the last three miles but the puppy had already done her business on the carpet so I stayed home and watch her.  I guess I was not ment to run today!

Great run and workout Kathie!!! I don't know how you do it all. Awesome!!!

Dale

From Rhett on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 15:35:43

Nice run, try and run through that point where you want to slow down and next time it'll be easier. To me race pace always means marathon pace, and tempo is at or a bit faster then 1/2 marathon pace. But if you are using a plan that is specifically for a 1/2 then maybe they do me 1/2 pace for race pace.

From Smooth on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 15:51:21

Tempo pace run is usually done at close to the pace you could currently race for 1 hour. That translates to your half marathon race pace. So, yes your tempo pace is the same as your half marathon pace.

Is the schedule you're following a training schedule for half-marathon? In a marathon training schedule, the race pace run is typically referred to miles run at marathon pace which is slower than tempo pace.

That was an AWESOME tempo run. You're getting so speedy. What's your goal for Painter's?

From Kathie on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 20:14:42

I would like to beat 1:53:03 that is my PR but I ran that at Hobble Creek which is a much faster course so I won't be too sad if I miss it.

From Smooth on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 23:09:59

Kathie,

My bad, I just look at your short term goal on the left and there it is. PR at Painter's Half 1:53

You can totally do it. This is what I think. On the tempo runs, try to run those 4-6 miles at a pace of 8:25 or faster, closer to the 8:17 end. On the race pace run, do them at 8:38 or slower. I'm guessing that to run a 1:53:00 Half the race pace is between 8:38 to 8:48.

The purpose of tempo run is to improve your lactade threshold, so you run them a bit faster than your goal race pace. I wouldn't run those pace for more than 6 miles and only once a week.

The race pace run miles can be done in your long run. Try running 1/4 to 1/3 of your long run in that pace. I hope this makes sense.

Oh yeah, every time my 16 year old come in the office where I have the irongym on the doorway, he'll bang out 5+ pull ups. He feels so sorry for me that one time he even lifted me up. That might made him feel very "coachy", but totally busted my ego.

Three miles @ 9:13 pace 1% incline

Lifted for hamstring, triceps, and abs

Gravitron 3 sets of 6@ 100 pounds.  The sixth one was really hard!

Spin class

OK here is the question of the day.  My legs are shot!  The 9:13 this morning felt hard when normally it is totally easy.  Spin class was also harder than normal.  So my question is - is this a good thing does that mean I have had a good hard week or have I pushed it too far?  What should I do tomorrow?  I normally do the elliptical at 11% incline and try to get 6 miles in under 43 minutes and then a yoga class (don't even try and talk me out of yoga!)

Sorry I guess that is more than one question!

Some days, running is just a little more difficult. If I were you, I'd make sure to eat well today, get a good night's sleep (both of which help along recovery, which is probably what your body is asking for), and go for your regularly scheduled workout tomorrow. If the excess fatigue continues to be a problem for several days or a week, take a day or two off, but one day of having dead legs just happens sometime. Best of luck to you.

From Rhett on Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 13:41:22

I agree. I think it means you've just got in some good work and since you have a month still till your goal race, I'd just keep up with normal schedule. I find that after I work through some tired legs, I usually have a break through some time in the next week or two. That will be just in time to start taking it down a notch in prep for you PR at Painter's.

From huans32 on Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 14:41:27

Listen to your body is my advice. If you are over you sickness I would just make sure you dont over do it again to soon and end up sick again. That is the caution side of me. The other side is to say dont do too many hard days in a row. I have found on days after a hard lifting with legs day or sometimes 2. Its great to do the spin classes to get rid of all that soreness. I love the xtraining for just that. Just listen to your body.

From Smooth on Thu, Dec 18, 2008 at 16:14:51

Looking at your running log this week. You did two tempo runs in a row the last two days. Correct me if I'm wrong. So yes, I think you've had a good hard week.

"The hard day/easy day training principle: hard training provides a stimulus for your body to improve, but rest is then needed to allow your body to recover and adapt to a higher level. Three reasons to follow this principle are: 1) to prevent glycogen depletion, 2) to prevent illness, and 3) to minimize the effects of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS)." p.66 (Advanced Marathoning)

Physiologically, each person responds differently to training and recovering. There are different factors that affect recovery rate. Some can handle two hard days follow by a day of rest, or one hard day follow by a day of active recovery.

I agree with what's been said: listen to your body. It's probably asking for a good recovery day today. Tomorrow it might say it's ready for active recovery in the form of cross training.

We've all experienced "dead legs" days. Your pace today was probably a good recovery pace.

Take good care and rest up today. I know tomorrow you'll be a new woman!

6 miles elliptical 11% resistance 46:40 It was very hard and very slow today.  In my mind I kept trying to go faster but my leg wouldn't obey.  Oh well I pushed through and now I am expecting the break through that Rhett promised yesterday!

Yoga - in my yoga class today we talked about this being a time of celebration.  In yoga to celebrate you do 108 of something so we did 108 chaturanga dandasana which is a fancy way to say push ups they look like this:

You go into this pose hold it and then press up.  We did them in sets of 12 but I only did the first set with out my knees on the ground.  I am not sure how much of a celebration it was, but my arms are in as bad of shape as my legs now!

Ten easy miles today with running group.  I ran the first 6.4 with a girl who said she wanted to run 10 minute mile pace.  It was a recovery run so I thought the pace would be good.  I think I pushed her a little to hard though, when I looked at the splits only one mile was at 10 min mile pace and that was up hill.  She didn't seem to complain but then I am not sure I stopped talking long enough for her to.

Splits: 9:49, 9:45, 10:28, 9:41, 9:23, 9:24, 9:23, 9:20, 9:32, 9:42

felt really good after the run. legs are not as sore but arms and back still are.

I am now helping my 15 year old with her birthday party and then the big game is tonight I am tempted to paint my fingernails blue, but hubby said they lost last time I did that so I better not jinx them.

From Ginger on Sun, Dec 21, 2008 at 20:11:26

Hi Kathie-

I'm getting a kick out of reading your comments from others regarding our run. The run was great and I didn't feel pushed at all. I simply don't do hills well (which are unavoidable in Utah esp. Bountiful). Thanks for slowing down a bit for me. I look forward to running with you again. I won't be there this Sat. as we are busy with the holiday. Not sore today...so that is good! :)

Merry Christmas!

5.93 miles on the elliptical.  I got stuck in my driveway and arrived at the gym late.  I only had 40 minutes until yoga started so i had to quickly get in my elliptical workout.  It was really hard and you think I could have just stayed on long enough to finish the the last little bit but then I would have been late for yoga and you all know I couldn't do that!

Good for you making it to the gym and got some workouts in. Where are you doing your long run tomorrow?

From Kathie on Fri, Dec 26, 2008 at 23:35:05

I am not sure I think I will stay close to home and run with the sdrr (south davis road runners) It is the group the Andy is in. I want to do 13.1 tomorrow to get in my last month for Cougars challenge, but I think the group will only do 6 so I am on my own for the rest.

From Smooth on Fri, Dec 26, 2008 at 23:38:28

Is the group running outside? I heard it's gonna be single digit in the morning. It's very ICEE here in my neighborhood.

From Kathie on Fri, Dec 26, 2008 at 23:42:48

Yes they will run outside. There is no way I could do 13 on the treadmill. I have a new jacket and pants that I want to tryout anyway. When I run with the group I think it is safer for me, most of the group is a head of me so by the time the cars get to me they are ready for runners.

From Smooth on Fri, Dec 26, 2008 at 23:46:11

The group only ran 7.5 miles so I did the last 2.5 on the treadmill. Anyway I felt like I was going much faster than the splits show and I am even a little tight as I write this I hope it is just the difference of running on icy road and non icy roads

Here are my splits 8:43, 8:53, 9:16, 9:43, 9:35, 10:01 (up hill and icy) 8:44, 8:57, 9:00, 9:16, 4:30 for the last .5

Congratulations for meeting your goal with Cougar's running one 13.1 a month this whole year. Those are pretty fast pace on icy hilly roads. You're gonna fly at Painter's.

From Andy on Sun, Dec 28, 2008 at 10:59:09

The icy roads definitely take more effort and will make you more tight. You are using your muscles in a different way to keep your balance. You did great today.

I really need to learn some of those Jedi, ninja or Rhett mind tricks to stay on the treadmill when want to get off.   At the time I thought "I can't go any farther" but sitting here I know I could have.  STINK!  This is just slightly faster than the pace I want to go at painters.  I am not sure how I think I can run 13.1 at this pace when I cant even do 4.

From RivertonPaul on Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 16:20:19

Nice job. Perhaps the treadmill calibration is off and you were actually running faster than you thought. (I know on my home treadmill that is always the case.)

From rhett on Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 17:28:48

I read the other day that when running against other people, one runs up to 20% faster than when runnning alone. Somehow the race day makes us all run a bit faster. A little tapering and some carbs go a long way also. I find that when I want to quit the tread mill, I just tell myself 1/2 mile more and if I still feel bad I can get off. Usually after that 1/2 mile I'm feeling a bit better and am able to keep on going. No matter how bad I feel, I can always do 1/2 mile more. Good run by the way!

From dongardinero on Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 22:16:23

great job Kathie....

Hey, the lower elevation at Painter's will help for sure.

Dale

From Cal on Mon, Dec 29, 2008 at 22:57:53

Don't be discouraged. Treadmill running can be harder both mentally and/or physically. (there's a lot of factors involved) You can't necessarily equate the pace with that on the road. Plus you have the raceday magic to keep in mind...

From Smooth on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 00:41:50

Kathie, I agree with what everyone has said. Good tempo run today. You're working so hard, you deserve to PR at Painter's.

From JeffC on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 11:19:38

Kathie...WOW! 7:28/mile that is awesome. Weather you run that pace at Painter's or not, that is still a really nice tempo run. Keep doing those kind of runs and you will see some amazing PRs this year. Also, the Jedi mind tricks will improve as you continue to do these runs, your mind just learns to deal with it when it figures out your body can handle it.

From Kathie on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 12:20:43

Sorry to disappoint Jeff but the 7:28 should have been an 8:28 maybe it was wishful thinking.

From JeffC on Tue, Dec 30, 2008 at 12:29:57
