Very hard miles today.  5.5 with Heidi and then a little over 8 on my own.  I got way too cold and finally did the last two on the treadmill.

The pollution was really bugging me today.  At times I had to stop and walk while I had a coughing fit.  I even got a side ache around mile 12.  I think it was because I was afraid to breath in too deeply...oh well at least I got them done!

Seven easy miles on the treadmill, I wanted to do 11 miles to celebrate 1-11-11 but I have a blister on my pinky toe that is killing me.  I got it on Saturday, it didn't bother me yesterday but today every step was so painful.  What is up with that.  I stop at seven miles tried to drain it and run more but it was still so painful.  I might try again tonight

You are putting in a lot of miles. How are you feeling? Did you register with the running club for 2011? I probably won't this year.

From Kathie on Thu, Jan 13, 2011 at 12:47:05 from 63.248.105.188

I am going to just because of the discount they give at Striders. I saved over 25 dollars last year so it was worth it. I am not sure how much I will run with them though.

From DonGardinero on Thu, Jan 13, 2011 at 13:15:27 from 184.224.237.203

From Kathie on Wed, Jan 19, 2011 at 07:57:48 from 63.248.105.188

No real goal at all smooth. I am training hard for Boston and will run 12 miles tomorrow so no real taper. My legs are feeling like lead this week so I guess my only goal is to cross the finish line so I only have to do one more race for the series.

I wanted to run with Heidi today, she could only run at 4:30 after her oldest son got home from school.  I started my run at 3:00 and ran 8 marathon pace miles.  Met up with Heidi and we did 4 more miles.  We had not ran for a while together and it was so much fun to run with her again.

Woke up with a horrible back pain.  I have a muscle in my back the knots up every now and then making it hard to even brush my teeth let alone run.  I took some of my husband prescription muscle relaxers, big mistake, I woke up 6 hours later just in time to babysit my grandson.  No running for me and by back didn't even feel better.

Six easy miles with Heidi and then 14 on my own.  We were dressed way to warmly when I got back to my house I stripped down to just a long sleeve running top, running tights and a baseball hat.  Four the next 7 miles I was loving the weather.  My run was going so great.  I went into a gas station to refill my water and use the restroom.  When I came out the wind was blowing hard and it was raining.  If I had gloves I think I could have made it home but I ran for another mile and I was freezing called my husband and I finished the last six on the treadmill.

Splits: 9:39, 9:36, 9:13, 11:02 (Heidi ate GU), 9:20, 8:50, 8:43, 8:34, 8:27, 8:34, 8:42, 8:41, 8:46, 8:38

I have not been very good at blogging this week and I don't think it will get much better.  My son and his wife are taking online college classes and because they don't have internet at their house they are using my computer.  When I can get on it is much more fun to read what you all are doing then to post what I am.

Easy MilesThreshold MilesMarathon Pace MilesTrack speed mileageHill mileageTotal
19.500.000.000.000.0019.50

worst run ever!  I had a really hard spin class yesterday, I was really feeling it right from the start.  This is why I think the miles are so slow.  However that is not the reason the run was bad.  I kept getting interrupted so rather than one long run I had 6 short ones! Not sure how to really count these miles, because it was not a 19.5 mile run, it was more like 3+3+3+2.5+4+4

First three miles with Heidi - 9:40, 9:29,9:18

3 By myself - 8:58, 8:56, 9:00

Now is when the run first got derailed.  I ran in woke my teenager up for school, she got really grumpy and it took me 45 minutes to get her out the door.

I then headed out for 11 more miles.  At mile 8.5 I started to feel really light headed, I knew I needed to eat.  I was a half mile away from Ensteines (sp) so I stopped in for bagel and chocolate milk. - 9:08, 9:11, 9:17

I headed out again and felt much better at 11.5 miles I stopped by my house to kiss my honey goodbye before he left on a trip. - 9:11, 10:46 (forgot to stop my watch at a light and running up hill)

Left to do the last few miles got 1.5 miles out and it started to snow really hard kept going for .5 miles and then turned around finished the four miles soaking wet and freezing. - 10:15, 9:10, 8:54, 9:15

I quickly changed out of my cold wet clothes and did 4 miles on the treadmill.  Really at this point I was so frustrated that I just walked on the treadmill so I am not sure if I should count these miles but I will because they still hurt which is sad in and of itself!

Kathie~

I read in one of the Runner's World articles that a run like that every now and then is actually super good for you! Really. You had several workouts in one day. My personal opinion is that it will be a huge benefit.

(I think the RW article said to run 3 miles 4 different times throughout a 12 hour period. Something like that. :))

My schedule called for 11 miles with 10 at marathon pace.  I was very sure that I was still too weak to do 10 miles at marathon pace but I wanted to get in as long of a run as I could.  I ran 4.5 miles with Heidi it was so fun to run with her again.

Splits: 9:28, 9:52, 9:45, 9:39,

I felt good after this run and I had 30 minutes before I had to wake my daughter up so I went out for 3.5 miles

Splits: 9:26, 8:57, 8:46, 8:39

While only two of the miles were at marathon pace it really was a pace effort for most of the run.  I was feeling light headed but I wanted to continue to workout.  I hopped on the treadmill set the incline to between 6-8 and walked up the hill for 5 miles until my buns were on fire!.  I still feel sick but I think I will try and run again tomorrow at a slow pace and work on speed when I feel better.

I wanted to run 9:30 for most of the miles but mostly I wanted to run longer than 10 miles without a long break.  I kept thinking that the wheels were going to fall off and I did get tired but never totally bonked!

Waiting for your post on your long run today! I was thinking about you finishing your run as I was just starting mine this morning!

Is this your biggest mileage week?

Wasn't the cougars AWESOME today? and Pitt was knocked off in a very very close game! guess no match up between the Cougs and Pitts.

First 8 with Heidi and Kimmy...Loved it!!!!

Next three with random runners I ran into running Ogden for the first time

Next 6 alone.

It was very windy and I kept telling myself that Boston is known for being windy and I should train in the wind but by mile 17 I had enough.

Last 5 on the treadmil

Miles are a lot slower than last weeks but i felt really good after the run.  I have 800 meter repeats on schedule for Monday and I think I will be able to do them because this run was so slow

The Pfitz schedule has me do 20, 17, 13. I may do 21, 18, 13. I prefer a 2 weeks taper, but with my fickle knee, 3 weeks is probably better.

Drove to the gym and it was full, really no treadmills at all!!! Went home and tried to do 800 meter repeats on my treadmill.  After 2 I thought it was going to fall apart.  I would have gone back to the gym but I promised to take my daughter shopping in Park City.  After we got home I was heading out to the gym again and what do you know my Grandson came over. They always seem to show up at dinner time but I love it!!!  Settled for two little old miles and a great day with family.

The plan was to run 5 easy miles with Heidi and then 10 marathon pace miles on my own.  Got up perfect running weather, a little windy but not too bad.  Off we went.  My legs felt like lead I couldn't get them to move Heidi's slow pace was killing me.  I also had some tummy issues, just made it home in time!  When we got back from our run I ate same toast it seemed to help but I wanted to wait for a hour to make sure.  I laid down on my bed and JUST NOW WOKE UP!!!  I slept from 6:30 until 9:30.  Now it is snowing and I just don't want to run outside.  Somebody kick me in the booty and get me out there...it will have to be a really hard kick!

Don't listen to Andy. You don't want to go out in the cold and snow and do that mp pace run that will help you feel confident and ready to rock Boston no matter what the weather is. Just stay inside, be a bum, and skip that workout that you are so ready to rock. Why not have some ice cream and cookies while you're at it too.

Kathie, you asked for someone to kick you in the booty and get you out there. I gave it my best shot, but in reality, I think you made a good call to rest. Make Saturdays run count, but don't overdo it. You will be just over 3 weeks out from your finest hour. Trust your training. It's been spot on.

four easy miles 9:13.  While on the treadmill I noticed that our gym has a rowing machine.  I has not noticed it before but then again I am not very observant! Any way I was bored on the treadmill so I thought I would give it a go for ten minutes before I lifted weights.  I loved it!  It really worked the back of my legs and my back itself.  Has anyone used a rowing machine in training?  Will it help my running?  I think I may add it in more often just because it was a change.

Sounds like a nice discovery to work different muscles! I would think that anything that helps strengthen your back and the big hamstring would help with running! NICE workouts!

We drove our 20 miler route this morning, not to measure the distance as Karen already did it on

Tue. But to find an alternate road that will take us north thru Cedar Hills. I think you will like the route, lots of farm country that will resemble the small towns from Hopkinton to Newtons! and a shorter version of Heartbreak hill at mile 17!

I'm so excited! See you bright and early.

I wanted to run another 20 miles even though I had run 22 last week.  I just don't feel ready for Boston.  Not sure why.  I have put in the training but I just don't feel fast or fit.

Just a short while into the run I step wrong on a rock and really twisted my ankle.  It didn't hurt so I kept going.  All the miles felt hard and labored, even though I was with Kimmy, Smooth and Karen I could find a rhythm or have any fun.  14 miles into the run my ankle started to throb, I looked at it and it didn't seem to be swollen or purple so I kept running.  At mile 16 just as quickly at it started to hurt it stopped.  However the rest of my legs felt like lead.  Smooth said she wanted to put in some marathon pace miles in for the last four.  I tried but could do it.  At the end of the run I was really disappointed in my performance.  I am not sure if I should change up my goal for Boston or call it just one bad run.

Thanks Smooth for running with me I wish I could have been a better running partner, I hope I can get my act together in just three short weeks.

On the hour drive home from Smooths house my ankle really started to hurt got home and iced it.  It never really got swollen just slightly purple.

Kathie ~ I am so so so so so sorry about your ankle! Karen and I worried sick and felt badly about it! I thought about texting you! DANG it!!!

I am sorry it was not a confidence builder run for you! There were a lot of uphills. Even though it was a big loop route, it has a net elevation gain of over 100 ft. The fact that you ran a 22 miler the week before and I think we were a bit dehydrated made for lead legs.

So chalk it up as just one not-so-good run. When I have a bad run, the next one is always better. No worries, you will do AWESOME at Boston!

Your training has been so solid! You have run lots of quality miles and quantity base mileage compare to last year. With the remaining tapering weeks, your body will absorb all that training. Doubt not, fear not. You will do AWESOME at Boston!!! I will pray like crazy that your ankle heals up quickly and completely! LOVE YOU!

From Rhett on Tue, Mar 29, 2011 at 16:55:04 from 74.36.33.52

Keep icing that ankle. Don't do anything crazy. You have already put in the miles and the work. Now you're just maintaining and recovering. Last year I did the pacing for the Havasu Half 9 days before Boston ( a very flat course) and ran a 1:31 when I was supposed to run a 1:30. I thought I was in trouble for Boston. 9 days later when I was fully tapered I ran a 2:58 at Boston with both halves being faster than 1:31. Trust your training. You will be ready!!!

Lifted for legs I will lift one more time and then take two weeks off

spin - very hard class.  We did cone intervals four times. This is were you start out with a 10 second interval and a 50 second rest.  Then you do 20 second interval with a 40 second rest. You keep doing it until you get to 60 second interval with 10 second rest.  Then you go the other way.  We did this four times with a 7 minute hill climb after the second set to REST really how can a hill climb be rest?

These were not running miles just hiking all over Moab/Arches.  I think we did a lot more than four miles but my husband gave me "the look"  when I tried to put my Garmin on.  I think he was right it was great not caring how fast or far we had gone.

Ran 10 miles of the SLC half route with Heidi.  She did great!  I think I am looking forward to her race more than Boston!

Splits: 9:42, 9:35, 9:13, 9:10, 9:31, 9:47, 9:24, 9:08, 10:22, 10:13,

She want to run it in under 2 hours.  I am not sure she is ready for that but I didn't want to burst her bubble.  I think she is capable of under 2 but this is her first half and I think she may fade mentally at the end.

You are such a GREAT friend and running partner to Heidi!!!!

I know how you feel about Heidi's first half! You have been there with her through her training, you want to be there for her at the race. There is something special, magical and joyful in one's first race!

If I hadn't already committed to Boston, I would have gone to run Salt Lake City with Karen! I made her promise to call me the minute she finished...I will probably just have arrived at Logan International!!!

speaking of which, when are you leaving for Boston?

4X400 meter repeats at 7:03 (8.5)  Felt hard but it was nice to get my legs moving fast.  Heidi joined me on the treadmill beside me.  She yelled at me and told me I couldn't say anything negative about my race from now on.  She is right so I am only going to think positive thoughts about running Boston.  I have put in the training good things will happen.

I leave for Boston in 45 minutes.  I have not decided if I want to take my lap top or not.  If I don't I will talk to you'all in 10 days.

Kathie, I will always remember being at the start of the Boston Marathon with you "Utah Grannies" last year (pretty smokin' grannies I might ad). You ran such a great 20 miler a few weeks ago, I know you're going to have a great Boston experience. Too much second guessing and stress, not enough excitement that you are living the dream! Good luck, have fun, run hard! Here's to good weather, and better company!!

Three easy miles on the hotel treadmill.  The last .25 miles I did at 3.0 incline just to feel heartbreak hillish.   It is raining so hard here I am glad it is not race day.

James and I drove the course today.  I got a few picture but because of the rain I didn't want to get out of the car that much.  I am such a wimp!  There were guys working to get the race together at the start. It was so cold and rainy I felt so sorry for them.  I looked like they had so much work to do and all in the rain.

This is going to be long so be prepared, Kimmy ask me to give her all the details.  If you only want to read about the my race skip to the heading Race Report.

James and I left for Boston on Monday the 11th, James was going to work all week and that left me time to sleep in and relax.  That is exactly what I did.  I think I got at least 8 hours of sleep each night and I may have even had one night with 10 hour!  I enjoyed several runs along the Charles River it is so beautiful.

On Wednesday we drove the course together.  I printed off the description of the course and would read it as James drove along.  I wanted to take a ton of pictures but it was raining really hard so I only took two.  One picture was at the start and then one at the John Kelley statue.

I was lucky to go to the expo on Friday right when it opened.  There was no crowd at all.  I kept telling James “this took us hours last year”.  We were done in just under an hour but my feet still hurt.  I have to remember that I need to wear my comfy shoes not my cute shoes to the expo.

Finally Saturday arrived and the crew started to come in.  We meet for the best Chinese food (thanks to Smooth and Larry) and great conversation!  Sunday morning went to brunch with Rhett and Doone again a great time.  I really think I do this just to be with all the great runners in our group!  After brunch we were off to church and then after church we went up to the North end of Boston for Italian food!!!!  I had ravioli and it was so yummy.  Because we ate so early we avoided the crowds, best idea yet (thanks Doone for setting that up).  After dinner laid out all my race stuff I was completely ready to go and it was only 8:00.  Took an Advil PM and I was out by 9:00!

Monday morning I woke up before my alarm went off at 5:00.  We were meeting at 6:15 in the lobby so I got up took a nice long bath ate breakfast and headed down right around 6:00.  It is a good thing runners are skinny I think there were at least 20 of us in the elevator!   I was happy to see that Rhett had tried to squeeze in the same elevator it was nice to see a friendly face. We had a group of 10 of us I hope I can remember them all: Lark, Canyon, Smooth, Rhett, Tom Slick, Hillbilly, Bobcat Terry (a friend of Canyon) and myself.

As we were loading up on the busses Tom and Hillbilly got separated and had to take another bus but we told them to meet us in the usual spot.   We started to blow up our air mattresses.  Smooth and Lark blew theirs up right away.  I however couldn’t get mine to blow up at all.  I finally gave up even though it had hardly any air in it.  Smooth and I then started to make our way to the port-o-potties we did this over and over we were very well hydrated.

Finally it was time to head over to the start.   Lark, Smooth and I were the only ones left in the third wave.  I kept looking around saying wow these people are all old, and then I realized I am old!!!!  I am going to try to work really hard to get into the second wave next year so that I can keep denying my old age for a while!  When we went to drop our bags at the busses it was a mad house.  I lost Smooth and Lark before the race had even started.  I waited for them for a while but knew I would never find them in all these people.

I hurried to the start and got there just as the gun went off.

RACE REPORT

It seemed to be a lot more crowded this year and everyone was running a lot slower.  Maybe it was because Teena was not at the start running like a crazy lady and setting a really fast pace!  I had a hard time getting around people and I was tired of fighting the crowd.  Anyway my first mile was supposed to be 8:32 and it came up as 9:03.  Thirty seconds behind and I am only on mile one.

I decided right then I am going to run by what feels good and see what happens. The splits for the next few miles are listed with the pace I should have ran in parentheses.  8:29 (8:40) 8:13 (8:32) 8:23 (8:32)

By mile 5 I have caught up and I even have gained an extra 30 seconds. I feel really good.  I am hoping that I have not gone out too fast and I will crash on the hills. Splits: 8:28 (8:58) 8:44 (8:34) 8:22 (8:40)

Still feeling great I hope I am not running to fast.  8:40 (8:45) 8:38 (8:40) 8:37 (8:50) by this time I am a minute ahead.

I know I am going too fast.  I tell myself that for the next six miles I need to slow way down and I try I really do. Splits: 8:58 (8:50) 8:37 (8:34) 9:06 (8:40) 8:42 (8:40) 8:58 (8:45) 9:07 (8:32) oh no I have slowed too much and I find myself 30 seconds slow again and I am losing steam.

I readjust my goal now instead of going for 3:50 I am going to try for 3:55.  This means I am now 4 minutes and 30 seconds ahead.  Unfortunately I am now heading into the famous Newton hills. Splits: 9:20 (9:11) 9:14 (9:11) 9:06 (8:45) 9:39 (9:01)

I am about to go up heartbreak hill.  I still have a few minutes in the bank but my legs are gone.  I now just want to qualify again anything under 4:00 and I will be happy. Splits 10:06 (9:16) 9:00 (8:45) 9:09 (8:45) 9:57

Two miles left I try to do the math I think I have qualified but my brain won’t work I give up 10:11 (8:45)

I see the CITGO sign…I think I can make it one more mile “come on Kathie you can do this” 8:38 (8:55)

I come in at 3:58:59 I just barely qualify, I hope I can get in next year just to see if I can ever run the last six miles of this race strong!

There are lots of fair weather runners on the trail in Murray as well. I guess they are just getting out of hibernation. Funny thing, for some, they must think it is still terribly cold. I ran in shorts and a t-shirt today and ran by one guy that was in a full Gore-Tex track suit. Maybe he is cold blooded.

We took my boys (7 and 8) for their checkups and both were referred to a cardiologist (My 7 year old's heart seems to be firing backwards, and the 8 year old has inherited my slow heart beat (54 bpm during his EKG...my wife told the doctor that my resting HR is in the low 30s, but that I'm a "marathon man"). We've got appointments with cardiologists in a few weeks..neither issue seems to be causing much concern at the moment, but we're getting them checked out.

I hope Nick's cardiologist has some favorable news for you.

Eight miles 6 with Heidi.  We both had the flu on Sunday (I think she gave it to me!) and stayed home from church.  I lost 4 pound on Sunday.  I thought about running on Monday because I felt much better but then it was raining and that was enough to convince me to stay in.  I did feel a little weak on this run so I think it was best that I didn't run yesterday.

6 miles with Heidi (not the one you are thinking of Maynard!) We started with two other neighbors but they said we were going too fast.  On the way back when we had about a half mile left we saw them in front of us. Heidi said "lets catch them" and we did.  We ran 6 miles in the same amount of time that they did 5!  I was so proud of Heidi, she is a little competitive...I wounder where she gets that!

I wanted to wait and write this up after I got my official time however the half marathon times are all messed up.  The gun time for everyone is three minute longer than the chip time and the chip time looks to be the gun time.  My official time is listed as 1:50:39 I know I ran it faster than that.  My Garmin shows me at 1:49:55 but I forgot to turn it off right away.  This wouldn't be so bad except I am very close to a pr and I wanted to see if I had reached it.  Oh well that is how it goes.

I was pretty sad getting ready to run this race.  Cristy and Kim had not signed up for it in time, and almost everyone I knew was running the full.  I got up drove myself to the bus pick up and really felt lonely.  I chatted with some people on the bus but it was just not the same as being with my sisters.

At the start I just hung around by myself until I ran in to Mark Owens, I latched on to his group and was totally happy to see a face I knew.  Mark and I ran the first few miles together but I could tell he was going a little faster than I wanted to go so I let him leave.  I was on my own for the rest of the race.  I didn’t print up a pace chart I was just going to run by feel.  I was pretty proud of how I gutted out the last 6 miles of Boston and I wanted to run this race hard enough so that I could feel that way at the end of this race too.  By the half way point I was feeling really great so I tried to push harder.  With 5 miles left I knew if I could just stay under 9 minute miles the rest of the way I could PR.  I was mentally in this race like never before and I knew I could do it.  I just wish I had an official time to confirm it.

The best part of the race was waiting for the marathoners to come in and see all my friends at the finish line!

8 miles on the treadmill, I just couldn't run in the rain again!!!!!  last mile I set the treadmill at 7.0 incline and 4.5 speed walking that fast really burns my hamstrings even more than if I ran.  The last .1 of a mile I set the treadmill to 1.0 and did walking lunges.  Can you tell I was bored to death!

I then did 10 minutes on the rowing machine.  I did 1889 meters with a 2:41 average pace.  I have no idea what this means but I thought I would post it for posterity!

Easy MilesThreshold MilesMarathon Pace MilesTrack speed mileageHill mileageTotal
12.000.004.000.000.0016.00

So my plan was tor run with Kim this Saturday.  We had not run together is a very long time.  We wanted to do 10 mile and then run my mom's ward 5K.  I just wanted to run it with my mom but I found out after I got to her house that she wanted me to win the whole think...She thinks I am much faster than I really am.

As we were laying out our clothes for the mornings run I discovered that I had forgot to pack my sports bra,  At this point I found out I come from a family of comedians.  They offered me Bandaids, a headband ear warmer, a 12 year old girls undershirt, and even told me to go with out as no one would notice.  In the end I just ran with my normal bra and it was no big deal!

Kim and I headed up the canyon for 6 miles into the wind it was very hard then 5 miles down hill.  As you can see our 10 mile run turned into 11 because Kimmy and I can't do math and run at the same time.  Because we ran an extra mile we arrived at the church just in time for a potty break and to start the race.

Splits for the first 11: 9:32, 9:47, 9:41, 9:31, 9:54, 9:35, 8:53, 8:20, 8:49, 8:59, turned of watch for last mile early but .67 in 6:18

When we got to the 5K I could tell there were some fast boys but I thought I could beat all the women, but you never can tell by looking.  Within the first .5 miles I had passed all the woman and a group of about 5 boys and 1 man were a head of me  It was and out and back course.  At the turn around the boys were about .25 a head of me and I was that far ahead of the next runner.  My legs were tired I knew I was going to be the first woman and that there was no way I could catch the boys so I slowed a little and came in at 25:10

Splits: 8:26, 8:03, 8:10

Last two miles I ran out to meet my mom and then ran her in.

Then the give out the spots based on how much faster than your BQ time you were. Everyone is notified 5 days after those five days if they got in.

Congratulations to your son.

Be happy with your MP miles. Even though you did not hit the pace you wanted, they were faster which is a very good sign. Worry less about the number and more about how they felt. If it felt like a good, consistent effort then the workout was a success.

Kathie, do you have any upcoming marathons? I'm loving the mental break from not having any coming up for the rest of the year. Physically I think I'm working just as hard, but knowing that I don't have anything I have to be ready for has been good for me.

13 miles, the route I ran is mostly down hill for 6.5 miles and then up hill for 6.5 with a huge hill right at the end.  The goals for this run were: 1) finish in good enough shape to do speed work on Monday. 2) finish in under 2 hours and 3) fuel well during the run.

To accomplish goal one I wanted to keep most of my miles around a 9:13 pace but if I felt great on the down hill I could speed up.  That way I could accomplish goal two.  Finally to accomplish goal three I walked and ate one power bar chew and drank, every two miles after three mile.  Just like aid stations.  This is why the even miles are a little slower than the odd.  I have found that this keeps me fueled up without giving me a tummy ache.

I did it I made all my goals!!!

Splits: 9:02, 8:46, 8:37, 8:46, 8:42, 9:00, 9:06, (starting to go up hill now) 9:14, 8:28, 9:31, 9:05, 9:37, 11:17 (walked most of the big hill)

Today called for 10 miles with 5 at half marathon pace.  I really pushed the first 5 miles.  At the turn around when I started to slow down my left calf  started to cramp up.  I would walk until it released and then run again.  I wanted the last 5 to be slow but not that slow.  Finally after mile 8 the cramping started to go away.  I walked the big hill up to my house.

From Smooth on Mon, Jun 27, 2011 at 12:53:35 from 67.2.109.45

Hmmm, I wonder if you had run at least one warm up mile before hitting half marathon pace or run uphill first for warm up then the calf would be happier? Also changing direction or terrains always cause my muscle to misfire especially when they are fatigued! I think I will do dynamic stretches (not static stretches) before any speed work, my old body needs extra time for warm up and cool down to avoid injury!

NICE run on a Monday morning! have a great week!

Went for a walk with my honey and grandson 1.25 miles into the walk my grandson rubbed his eye with a hand that I had just put sun screen on.  His eye turned red and he started to cry.  We had nothing to help him out my husband tried to wipe it out with his T-shirt and that seemed to help a little but he kept crying so I turned around and started running home.  As soon as I started running he stopped crying but I kept running so I could get him home.  When I got home my leg didn't hurt at all. So I did something that may prove to be very dumb, but because I hate to go to the doctor so much and my leg was feeling fine I called and canceled my doctors appointment.  I think it is just shin splints and all the rest I have been giving it has really helped.  I am going to try and run three miles tomorrow and see how it goes.

If it is just shin splints my next question is where do I go from here.  Clearly I can't follow my old training schedule so what do I do?

No worries!!! 9 weeks is plenty time to build the endurance back!

See if you like this Sat. long runs build up starting this Sat.

16, 14, 18, 20, 17, 15, 20, 14, 10, 26.2 or a less conservative one:

16, 14, 20, 17, 18, 17, 21, 16, 12, 26.2

Either one gives you two 20 milers and that is all that you'll need. If you feel like you can run three 20 milers then run it in between the two 17 milers instead of the 18.

Ran with Brenda today.  I have been trying to get her to run with me for a long time now.  She is training of St. George too.  I this will be her first St. George but I think she had done 4 other marathon.  I had a great time it is so much more fun to run with someone than to run alone.

I drove to Orem, stayed with my mom and Kimmy.  I wanted to run 16 miles, at mile 9.5 my leg started to hurt again out of nowhere.  We had  3.5 miles to go just to get home.  We played it safe and just walked those miles.  By the end of the 13 miles my leg was really bothering me even though I had taken 800 mg of Advil.  The drive home was the worse part I had a hard time keeping pressure on the gas petal.  When I was almost home I remembered that I had cruse control silly me!  I iced my leg all day and today (Sunday) it feels a lot better.

I do have to say that the best part of the run was the 3.5 mile walk with Kim.  We laughed and talked like we used to when we didn't care about our times.  I know that I am very competitive and not keeping track of my times will be hard but that is what I am going to do from now on.  I have been to Boston twice and if I never go back I am totally OK with that.  Starting Monday I run for fun and fun only.  That doesn't mean I wont push myself because, seeing how good you can be is fun.   I just don't care any more how fast I am and if I don't meet a time goal I won't beat myself up over it (how fun is that!!!!)

I am also going to start to go back to my spinning classes.  I have always loved spinning but I have cut back only going once a week so I can run more.  I am now going to run 3-5 miles before spin and then go to class at lease 3 times a week.  If I am slower, so be it I will be happier!!! (Yea me!!!!)

I have also decided to only run a few more marathons.  If I get into Boston this year I will run it again.  I will run St. George until 2014 when I get into the 10 year club. After that I think I will run a half marathons several times a year until I die or can't run anymore.

This is my plan for now and my main goal for St. George this year has gone from 3:45 to having a blast!!!!!  I am so looking forward to trying to reach this goal!!!!  If you see some slow runner with a smile on their face it is most likely to be ME!!!!!

Kathie...I see you took our conversation on Saturday and thought about it all weekend. I have enjoyedthe last few times of running with you, that is what makes running fun. I miss all our time together. I know you are going through a tough time right now with your leg..but things will get better.

I think you are wise to do your spin class...do what makes you happy, not what you think you have to do; to be fast...

Look forward to this weekend :)

I love your plan!!! Way to go!!!

I have pretty much given up on trying to be fast. I want to enjoy my races, too.

Just don't become as slow as I am. LOL

I hope you can get your leg healed up. I think you can with less running and more spinning.

From Smooth on Tue, Aug 02, 2011 at 22:23:10 from 67.2.116.101

Kathie ~ I am so happy to hear you and Kimmy had a nice sister run-walk-talk-time together! I have learned that PRs and awards are nice, but spending time doing the things you love with those you love is PRICELESS!

I am so happy that you are finding JOY in running! Happiness is really a choice, a state of mind! I know it's hard to find joy when you are dealing with pain and injury. But you are making a conscious choice, a sound plan...you are doing awesome!!!

Oh I am selfishly excited that you have changed your 3:45 time constraint to having a blast! :) Now perhaps I can jump on your party wagon at SGM?!!

Kathie, those shoes are awesome, aren't they? I got a pair a couple of months ago and they are so comfortable and light, as you mentioned. I've ran in them a few times, but trying to ease into them slowly, mostly by wearing them around the house, since they are considered a "barefoot Shoe."

3 miles on the hotel treadmill.  I wanted to go further but there was only one working treadmill.  When I had run 1.5 miles a guy came in and wanted to run too.  He tried to get the broken treadmill to work but couldn't so I let him have mine.  I had already walk all around the French Quarter for at least 3 miles so I was good for the day.  I worked my core a little and did some walking lunges before I left.

One day she's running with someone named Heidi and the next she's running on a hotel treadmill and walking 3 miles in the French Quarter. Interesting.

I'm guessing New Orleans, but France would be way cooler. Where ever you are Kathie, I hope you're having fun.

Everyone that I know who ran the Halloween Half complained about calf pain. It must be the course especially the first few miles of severe downhill combined with the cold = inadequate warm up = tight calves?

Hope your calf feels better real soon!

One mile warm up.  1 mile at 8:20 mentally could hold the pace longer than that so lame!!!! I would run during the songs on VH1 and walk through the commercials not really a temo run but better than staying in bed.

Lifted for abs back and arms.

Four easy miles on the treadmill.  Heidi's kids were sick so she stayed home. I didn't want to brave the cold alone.
