I got up early so I could run with the Gumps.  When I woke up my hammy actually felt better and I was looking forward to a great run.  It was not to be, the first three miles felt ok, but soon into the fourth mile I could feel it starting to burn.  I has started to run with Paul and I thought the pace might have been too fast but my Garmin said we were right on pace.  By mile 6 I was having a hard time holding the pace and at 6.5 I told Teena and Paul to go on without me.  Of course they refused and talked me into getting Teena's pool belt and pool running the last 8 miles.  On the drive home from the run the pain was really bad.

I got to the pool around 8:00 and was happy to see three lanes open.  I was not sure if this was going to work and for the first 10 minutes even pool running hurt.  The pain decreased by quit a bit after 15 minutes and did not increase until 75 minutes in the pool.  I ran for a total of  80 minutes.  Not sure if that is the same as an 8 mile run, I never felt out of breath or tired, maybe I am not doing it right.  Every now and then I would run hard for a minute and the easy for a minute but for the most part I just kept and even pace.  As I sit now typing this the pain is coming back even though I am on ice.  I think I should elevate it but how do you elevate you Butt?

Anyway thank you so so so much Paul and Teena for putting up with me, I swear I really don't act like a 2 year old all the time!  Teena thank for letting me use your belt it really think it saved me!

Kathie --

Sweet Sis ... that is how pool running feels. Your heart rate doesn't rise at much and so you really don't feel tired. You did it right, I'm sure.

I love you. Please take it easy for a few days. Seriously ... let your body use any extra energy you have to heal. Get lots of sleep and eat very very very well. Give the body everything it needs so it can take care of itself. I will call you tonight after my work party.

Love you.

kathie....please take care of yourself. I hate it when you are injured because you don't know what it means to take it easy.

I didn't get up and run this morining. I did a pretty hard workout last night and when I woke up my whole side just hurt. I will try and get in a run tonight or maybe tomorrow morining. I want to try and get a 12 to 14 mile run in. We will see how it goes. :)

I'm so sorry, Kathie. That really bites!!! I'm glad you stopped running when you did.

Oh Kathie! I am so sorry the hammy is giving your grief! You were smart to stop. WAY to get right into the pool running. I'm glad Paul and Teena were there. Those two are experts in pool running, I'm sure.

My grandbaby knows how to elevate his butt...that's how he sleeps...buttoms up! :) Seriously, keep up the rehab! Speedy recovery to you!

I'm sure there are lots of yoga poses that involve butt elevations. Sorry to hear about the hamstring. Teena would know better than I but wouldn't pool running still put too much strain on the hamstring?

From Teena Marie on Sun, Jul 18, 2010 at 21:45:40 from 174.52.45.85

Andy, that is hilarious!!!! We definitely need Kathie to figure out the appropriate yoga poses and post them (think of all the people she could help). :) And yes, pool running (or anything else that flexes the knee and extends the hip) is going to fire the hamstring muscles. Kathie says that her pain only comes on impact though (or too high of resistance on the ellipticle), so hopefully pool running is a good option. "Hopefully" is the operative word. I can't help but wonder if it is her piriformis though because when she pointed to her pain she was pointing really closely to where that muscle is located (and with piriformis syndrome the pain usually localizes to the hamstrings).

Dang -- someone needs to develop a differential computer program for runners that we can all use! That would be SWEET!!!

Rest it before it is too late. That would be the advice from this injured runner who did not follow that advice.

Good luck what ever you decide.
