I was bored with my old running route so I decided I would run/hike up to elephant rock today.  round trip it would be 12 miles.  The first mile is fairly flat and all went well with that mile.  During the second mile my left calf started to scream at me.  I wanted to push through, it didn't really feel injured.  By mile three it was really screaming at me so I turned around.  I think it was a good thing I did because I fell twice on the way down.  I guess I didn't realize how hard going down would be.  My calf is now on ice I really don't think I injured it but you can't be too cautions this close to Boston.  Here are the splits I am sure they are really slow with how steep the climb was.

Splits: 8:58, 12:08, 12:41, 10:23, 9:17, 8:50

Here are some photos I took at mile three

Oh noooooo!!! I sure hope your calf is alright. So close to Boston...good thing you turned around early.

Looks like a fun hike/run---when there's no snow on the ground. Pretty when there is. Now I need to see a picture of elephant rock..so see why it is name like that.

Get that calf better soon.

What were you thinking doing something like this so close to Patriot's Day? Hope it is nothing serious.

I'm glad you finally came to your senses and turned around. I'm sure it is just a little stain. Get back on your elliptical machine and take it easy for a few days and you'll be back in business.

I'm thinking you just broke the "Nothing Stupid" rule attempting such a steep run with less than 4 weeks to go. No more of that!!!!!!

Oh my heck! I remember you talking about trail run up to Elephant Rock during our Sat run. That is a mountain you climbed up on! I'm too chicken to try something that steep. Remember how I couldn't even navigate around that fence at the trail closure?

Beautiful pictures though...it's way up there with all that snow.

Sure hope your calf is okay! We got to remember Rhett's mantra: NOTHING STUPID!

The plan really was to take it easy. I thought a 12 mile slow hike would be easier (both on my brain and body) than the 10 mile run I had planed. I wanted to do 15 minute miles and take it easy. My mistakes were going too fast and thinking my trail shoes would give me enough traction on the way down.

Oh my, I hope your calf is ok. That's just terrible. Isn't it funny the things we try so close to a big race? Well, at least you got a cool picture. I agree, you should take a few days on the elliptical.
