The schedule called for 7 race pace miles.  I am still not sure what my race pace is, should it be 9:06 (BQ) 8:46 (Kims BQ) or 8:34 (goal pace maybe?)? I didn't quite know how to handle this run.  At first I was going to do it on the treadmill and run it at 8:34 but I know that I have a problem feeling what pace I am running and I should do it outside to get the feel of the pace.

I drove to LPT because it is a little flatter (or should that be more flat) anyway here are the splits

Splits: 8:37, 8:11, 8:15, 8:30, 8:33, 8:45, 8:32

As you can see they were all over the place and I never really knew what pace I was going.  It all just felt hard more like a tempo run than a race pace run.  Going off of these splits what do you think I should shoot for as my race pace for Ogden? (Boston I am going to just run for fun) And how do you guys that can run such even split get to know what you are running?  The 8:11 mile felt just like the 8:45 to me!

I think some people are just born with internal stopwatches :)

Why can't I be one of them?

As much as I hate to suggest it, you should probably race something before to get an idea of what your pace should be. Even a 5k could provide some indication of goal time. Sasha's Fast Running Blog race predictor http://www.asksasha.com/predictor.php is very good.

Since Ogden is a little slower than SGM I would shoot for something between 3:50 and 3:55. Your Painter's time predicts something close to that as well.

There is no secret to running consistent paces. You just have to get used to what the leg turnover and breathing effort feel like at different paces. You have so many hills around where you live it makes it difficult to get a good feel for a specific pace.

I dunno how people, Andy in particular, can just dial up a certain pace on demand. They have this internal speedometer. Andy's tempo splits are within one to two seconds. When I do my tempo runs, my splits are all over the place. I think it takes lots of practice to sense the feel. To me marathon pace feels like a steady stamina run; half marathon feels like I'm in a hurry; 10K race pace is between comfortably hard to hard; 5K pace feels like I'm going to die!

Looking at your SG time of 3:54, based on that mp of 8:56 and your today's run's AP, I'd say your mp has improved. I agree with Paul, you might want to run some tune up races. Also, You will get a better feel after Boston.
